You guys remember how obsessed I was with Phantogram back in early 2012, right? Well, last week I won tickets to their sold out show at Showbox at the Market by way of a giveaway through their record label. I was so freaking ecstatic! So last Thursday I rounded up my friend Trevor and we proceeded to get drunk in various... interesting bars in Post Alley and then stumbled up to the Showbox for a fucking badass show. It was so amazing. I can't even begin to tell you. Wish I had more money at the time to have purchased their new EP on vinyl, but oh well. I'll be checking Ebay for it ;)

Music Monday #63 - Fiona Apple
I opened the floodgates to an hours-long Fiona Apple k-hole of sorts after comparing Miley Cyrus' new music video to a tackier, skankier version of "Criminal" (now with 100% more twerking and product placement!). This led to listening to "Tidal" for old times' sake. Then "When The Pawn". Then "The Idler Wheel" (holy eff, I've had this one for a while and hadn't yet listened to it; AWESOME). Then all three again. This woman is still mindblowing. "Tidal" was a huge part of my extremely depressing summer of '98 and all those feelings can almost still be felt when I listen to it.
She's just incredible. A ridiculously enormous talent.

Music Monday #62 - Purity Ring
I just found this band. I'd heard of them occasionally by way of people I follow on Twitter. Constant praise, "OMGZ saw Purity Ring tonight, so good!" Etc. But I just listened to them for the first time last Tuesday and haven't listened to anything else. It's like Phantogram all over again. I want it inside my brain forever.

Music Monday #59 - Iggy Azalea
Say what you want about Iggy Azalea. I love her, and I'm not even a very big fan of rap music in general. "Work" has been on a continuous loop in my brain for the past week or so. Awesome freeway-driving song :D

Music Monday #57 - Soundgarden
Don't even care if I seem cliched because of where I'm from. Best song ever. EVEREVER.
This album blew my brain to bits. I came upon the whole of it late, when I was about 10 years old. Superunknown was released in 1994, and we had accidentally obtained a cd copy via our BMG subscription service that usually sent us cassettes (if that doesn't date me, I don't know what does!), but didn't get our first cd player until mom's birthday in 1995. So when I finally got to hear it in its entirety, it changed everything. I go back to a lot of songs and albums from my childhood and find that something is missing and/or my ears are too worldly/experienced for it to hold up in the present day. Not this album. It's still as wonderfully dreary and heavy as it ever was. Thank you for this album, Soundgarden. So much <3
Also, my mom bumped into Chris Cornell while out clubbing once in Seattle when I was a little kid and I always dreamed about what it would be like if he was my dad. Hahaha! I'm ridiculous, I know :P

Music Monday #54 - Metric
So, I'm not sure what freaking rock I've been living under, but I never got a chance to get into Metric until last week. As I listened to their entire discography, I realized I used to hear a handful of their songs when I worked at Guess from 2006-2008, but never found out the artist. Brandon, Terry and I were watching Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World on Christmas and when Brandon mentioned that the song "Black Sheep" that The Clash at Demonhead plays was originally by Metric, I was all over it. Stuck every song I had downloaded about a year prior (and apparently immediately forgot about) onto my phone and listened constantly in my car.
Have you ever been totally oblivious to a well-established band and wanted to kick yourself when you discovered them years later? Because I've done this before (hello, Human Waste Project!) and I CAN'T be the only one! PLEASE TELL ME I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE! *sob*
Anyhow, add me on last.fm!

Music Monday #53 - No Doubt
Man, I have no idea what happened to No Doubt/Gwen Stefani between 1999 and now, but I'll be very blunt: with the exception of a handful of solo songs, I don't like it. No sir. The Tragic Kingdom and Return of Saturn albums were the best, hands down. Little Bre's No Doubt addiction had already been in full-force since 1996, but I remember seeing this music video at the tender age of 14 and being completely blown away. THAT HAIR. THAT MAKEUP. It was pretty much life-altering for me. How times have changed...
I MISS THIS GWEN </3

Music Monday #50 - Crystal Castles
Okay, okay, so I lied. When I promised no more Crystal Castles, I TOTALLY forgot they were releasing a new album like a week after that. Oh well. I already did a half-assed review in this post, so I'll just direct you there, ha! Super good.
I did actually do a huge music swap on my phone so I'd quit listening to that same old crap in the car, though! I find myself gravitating toward a lot of old school late '70s/early '80s punk rock/post-punk lately. I can't get enough of it.

Music Monday #48 - Crystal Castles
I swear, after this week, I'll cool it with the Crystal Castles. It's definitely past time for me to swap out the music on my phone, haha!
Speaking of, I had some weirdo dreams about this group the other night. In a series of weirdo dreams. If you're familiar with Crystal Castles, I dreamt that I was some kinda CSI agent or something who uncovered some grisly truths behind the song "I Am Made of Chalk", which, it turned out, contained screams of actual murder victims. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me too much if someone spread an urban legend similar to that in real life. That song is actually seriously creepy, without having my subconscious tack nonsense onto it. Later that night, I also dreamt that Britney Spears had died and that Avril Lavigne had committed suicide after not being able to handle the ridicule that came with being engaged to Chad Kroeger.
What the hell, bro?
ANYHOW! Ha! Add me on last.fm, if you feel so inclined. Or don't. Because I have obviously suffered head trauma at some point D:

Music Monday #46 - Deftones
One track mind this week, haha!
It could have been how gorgeous this song is, or it could have been the copious amounts of alcohol coursing through my bloodstream, but this song totally broke me at the show last weekend. Go ahead and imagine little ol' Bre bawling by the merch booth to this song. It's actually really funny in hindsight :D I can't believe they even played this song, it was goddamn amazing.
